OHS
Baseball
Reaches
State
Semifinals
- Coach
Earns 100th Win |
|
OHS’ baseball team advanced
to the state semifinals after a strong campaign.
Coach Art Green won his 100th game in charge of the Knights after
a doubleheader sweep of defending state champion Deming.
The Knights were virtually unstoppable in District, nearly going
undefeated. Onate beat
Moriarity in the state quarterfinals but fell to Piedra Vista in the
semifinals. The Knights look
to be competitive in AAAAA next year.

OHS
Softball
Reaches
State
Tournament
- Team Gains Unprecedented
Success
|
|
The Onate softball team
advanced to the state tournament for the first time in the school’s
history. The Knights
qualified for the state tournament as the District 3-4A runner-up behind
Silver. Onate finished the
season 14-12. OHS benefited
from a bizarre late-season game when they downed Belen because Belen had
their batters hitting out of order.
The Knights fell to Artesia in the state quarterfinals.

OHS Girls Track Finishes
Fourth in State
- Knights Set New State
Record in 400 Meter Relay
|
|
The Onate Girls track team
finished fourth in the state after strong individual and team efforts.
Most notably, the team set a new state record in the 400 meter
relay with a time of 49.73 seconds.
Darnisha Jones also won the individual state championship for the
100 and 200 meter dashes – often considered the most high-profile
events in track and field.

OHS Boys Track Finishes Eighth
in State
- Coach Nunez Pleased with
Result
|
|
The Knights’ boys track team
finished eighth in the state. Individual
event highlights included finishing second in the 800 meter relay by an
agonizing .07 of a second to
Albuquerque
Academy
.
James Williams finished third in the long jump.
The Knights also finished third in the 400 meter relay.

straight district singles title in tennis.
She then advanced all the way to the state championship in
singles before falling in the finals.
The Boys Team did not place any individuals in the state
tournament.

OHS Cheer Remains on
Self-Imposed Probation
- Stealing from Mickey Mouse
Bears Heavy Consequences
|
|
The OHS cheerleaders have had
recent success at state, regional and national competitions.
The Knights finished fourth in state this year.
However, on the whole they stayed much closer to home after a
shoplifting controversy at a national tournament at
Disneyworld
.
Apparently, some of the cheerleaders were caught shoplifting by
chaperones. The exact terms
of punishment are still unknown.

OHS In-Line Skating Goes
Winless, Advances to Championship Anyway
- Knights Finish Second in
City to Cruces High
|
|
The relatively new OHS in-line
skating team played a four game-season against local competition.
The Knights went 0-3-1 but advanced to the championship anyway on
goal differential. OHS’
record was merely a reflection of the fact that other schools (Deming,
Silver, etc., etc.) are too chicken to even field a team.
The Knights, despite their record, were game competition in the
final, taking an early lead over
Las Cruces
.
However, the Knights fell by one goal.
Maybe someday in-line skating will get sanctioned by the State to
allow for more widespread competition.

| OHS To Begin Competition in
AAAAA
|
|
Oñate
has apparently reached the
necessary enrollment figures and satisfied the other criteria to move
from AAAA to AAAAA. The
change will go into effect next school year (‘05-‘06).
OHS will share a district with Las Cruces, Mayfield, Gadsden, and
Alamogordo. The upside of
the move is that Oñate will now compete at the top
level, and its rivalry games will have an extra element as a District
contest. On the other hand,
the Knights have hardly been world-beaters in AAAA this season.
OHS is still smaller than its cross-town rivals and thus has a
smaller pool of talent from which to draw.
Lean years could be ahead.
|
| Wrestling
|
|
Oñate had 4 wrestlers place at the
state tournament for the first time since roughly when we were in
school. Isaac Abeyta placed
second in the 103-weight division. Josh
Abeyta placed sixth in the 119-weight division.
Tyrel Anderson placed fifth in the 145-weight division.
Billy Colon placed sixth in the 171-weight division.
The Team finished twelfth overall.
The Knights were not expected to make much noise at the state
tournament. Their surprising
results were a pleasant surprise in an otherwise tough year for OHS
teams.
|
| Girls Basketball
|
|
OHS fell to Silver in the
District 3-4A semifinals and failed to qualify for the state tournament.
The Knights were well below the .500 mark for the year but showed
improvement as the year went on. This
year proved uniquely difficult for the Knights as Mayfield, Deming, and
Silver all fielded very strong teams (Mayfield was undefeated on the
year until they choked in the State championship).
|
| Boys Basketball
|
|
The boys basketball team had a
similar season. They started
off slowly because of a tough non-District schedule against their future
AAAAA opponents. At one
point, the Knights sported a 3-12 record.
Their record was a bit misleading, though, as the team was
generally competitive. They
just could not put a complete game together.
The year ended with a loss to Silver in the District 3-4A
semifinals. OHS did not
qualify for the state tournament. The
Knights were fairly young and have decent talent returning next year.
